Mark 2: 1-5 tells us about Jesus’ healing of the paralyzed man:

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home.  They gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them.  Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” NIV

When reading this story, we tend to focus on the healing of the paralytic and the reaction of the Pharisees to Jesus’ words. But I want to stop for a bit and focus on those 4 crazy friends of his!

Like the Paralyzed Man, We Need Jesus Right Now

The room was packed full. It was beyond standing room only! There was not even room at the door. Everyone turned out to see Jesus and to hear what He had to speak!

But these crazy friends had a mission; they needed to get their friend to Jesus! The paralyzed man needed healing and they just knew JesusThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 1 would provide it! They faced a challenge though! There was no room to get their friend inside the home to reach his healing!

Many would have given up. They would have said ‘maybe next time’. Maybe they would have just waited outside in the hopes Jesus would see them as He came out of the house.

But these weren’t just any friends! These were crazy, radical friends…

These were dedicated friends but they were also friends of radical faithThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 2. They needed Jesus now! They didn’t care who was in the room with Him or the barriers that stood in their way. The paralyzed man, their friend, needed Jesus now!

Luke 5:17 tells us:

On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with him to heal. (ESV)

The room was filled with Pharisees. These were the religious leaders, the educated, the elite.

But 4 crazy friends had no regard for the status of the men in the room. Their friend needed help.

Like the Paralyzed Man, Everyone Needs Crazy Radical Friends

The paralyzed man was blessed beyond measureThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 3. He received healing from the King of Kings and Lord of Lords because he had the blessing of friends who cared so much that they would stop at nothing for him!

I mean think about this! These men tore up the roof of someone’s home! That is pretty radical stuff!

We all need crazy friends who will do whatever it takes to carry us to Jesus!

Proverbs 18:24 says:

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin,
but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. NIV

Proverbs 17:17:

A friend loves at all times,
and a brother is born for a time of adversity. NIV

Proverbs 27:17:

As iron sharpens iron,
so one person sharpens another. NIV

A friend is a great blessing! Having a friend who will do whatever it takes to carry you to Christ is beyond value!

BEING a friend who will do whatever it takes to carry your friends to Jesus, the way these crazy friends carried the paralyzed man, is even better!

How do you carry a friend to Jesus? Well, you don’t have to tear any roofs apart!

Pray for Your Friends

Pray! Carry their needs The Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 4to the Lord in prayer! Stand in faith with them and stand in the gapThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 5 FOR them!

They may have specific prayer needs for health, finances, relationships, etc., or it may be they are not yet saved and you can bring that to the Lord as well!

FerventThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 6 prayer for a friend is the best thing you can do for them! Praying for your friend’s needs without ceasing, and asking others to pray with you, is the equivalent of tearing off the roof!

Show Them Jesus

Don’t just tell them about Jesus, show them Jesus!

I have said it before in other posts…you may be the only BibleThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 7 someone ever reads!

Always conduct yourself in a way that does not cause your friend to stumble or fall! Aside from ensuring his healing, these friends demonstrated great faith to the paralyzed man! If his faith wasn’t as strong as theirs beforehand, I am sure it increased dramatically afterward!

Telling your friends about JesusThe Paralyzed Man and Jesus - Everyone Needs 4 Crazy Friends 8 is important! You should absolutely witness to your friends. But, showing them Jesus can do more than mere words ever could.

If you tell them about the Lord but then act in a way that contradicts that, you can do serious harm.

Never Give Up!

Never stop praying for them! Don’t stop showing them the love of Jesus! Never think they are too far gone! Never stop having faith in their healing, their marriage, their job, their salvation!

Jesus is right there…just waiting for you to tear off the roof!

  1. I love this perspective! Friendship has been hard for me. I always have a few close people and that’s it (mainly husband, mom, dad, brother). But God is showing me the blessing of stepping out of my comfort zone to pursue people.

  2. It’s so true that Christians need godly friends that will push them towards Jesus. I had never really thought about the crazy friends in that passage but I love that you pointed that out. I don’t know where I would be without godly friends.

  3. I so agree, we all need crazy friends. 🙂 Life is so boring with out them, but even more than that, we need to find our tribe of people that will have our back and do the crazy to help us walk out what Jesus is calling us to do. Blessings and thanks for the link up.

  4. This is one of my favorite Bible passages! <3 I do want to be that kind of friend… crazy in love with Jesus and crazy enough to do whatever it takes to bring others to Jesus! 🙂

My husband and I are so blessed to have had some really crazy friends by our side through the trials we’ve faced surrounding my husband’s unfaithfulness and sexual addiction. When he (my husband) was finally willing to do whatever it took to break free from it all, his best friend made himself available to ride along to every single place my husband needed to go during the work day. (It helped that they worked for the same company and my husband was his boss… so he wasn’t going to get in trouble for this or anything) It was a huge sacrifice, and he did it for nearly two years!!! Simple to provide accountability and support for my husband to alleviate the temptation to go somewhere gross. It made a HUGE difference in his chance to succeed in his recovery. Crazy friends who love Jesus, and love us are the best! We will thank God forever for ours!

    1. That’s a very good friend indeed! You both are blessed to have someone willing to be that accountability partner he needed! Thank you for sharing your story!

  6. Diane, I loved this. I already loved that Bible story but now it has much deeper meaning. Thank you so much for sharing!

  7. Hello, Diane! Visiting you from the “Blogger Voices Network” page. 🙂

I enjoy your perspective on this story. These men really loved their friend! In my own life, I have had many struggles with relationships; they just don’t come easy to this highly introverted person. But your encouragement to step out in faith for the ones I love is needed. I have to learn to shove past hurts aside and love like Jesus loves. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Hi Marie!
I totally get you! I am very introverted. It is not easy for me to jump out and be social. I am very friendly and get on great with people once I know them, but with new people I am just very reserved. So I know exactly how you feel. Us introverts need to stick together!! I am so glad you enjoyed the post!!
