How the Reading Cycle Works

Each parashah is read on the Sabbath, and the cycle is built to complete itself in one year. Because the Hebrew calendar is lunar-solar, some years run shorter than the fifty-four portions require. So in those years certain portions are doubled up and read together (you’ll see these paired and marked in the calendar). The appointed times interrupt the ordinary flow as well: on a feast, the regular portion gives way to the reading assigned to that day.

The cycle never truly stops. It closes at Simchat Torah in the fall, when the final portion — V’Zot HaBerachah, the blessing at the end of Deuteronomy — is read, and then, without pausing to breathe, the scroll is rolled back to the beginning and Bereshit — “In the beginning” — is read the very next Shabbat. The end of the story is the doorway back into it. That unbroken loop is itself a kind of teaching: the Word does not run out.

Why Read the Torah with the Besorah?

This is what makes the calendar below Messianic rather than simply Jewish. Alongside each Torah portion and its Haftarah, it pairs a reading from the Besorah (בְּשׂוֹרָה) — good news, glad tidings. It is the Hebrew word standing behind the Greek euangelion, the word we translate “gospel.” To read the Besorah with the Torah is to do exactly what Yeshua Himself did on the road to Emmaus, when, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He opened the Scriptures and showed how they spoke of Him (Luke 24:27).

He did not come to abolish the Torah and the Prophets, but to fill them full. So the three readings are not three separate subjects sharing a date. The Torah instructs, the Prophets bear witness, and the Besorah reveals the One they were always pointing toward. Read together, week after week, the portions begin to illuminate one another, and the whole counsel of God stays in front of you instead of the handful of passages we tend to circle back to on our own.
