Mary Magdalene, also known as Miriam from Magdala, is introduced in the Gospels as a devoted follower of Yeshua. Her title, “Magdalene,” indicates she came from Magdala, a bustling town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.
Magdala (Migdal in Hebrew, meaning “tower”) was a fishing and trading hub, known for its prosperity and possibly its reputation for moral and spiritual struggles in the community.

Archaeological discoveries, including a synagogue, fishing tools, and a well-preserved mikveh (ritual bath), give us a glimpse into the daily life and spiritual practices of its people.

Some traditions speculate that she may have been wealthy, as she helped support Yeshua’s ministry financially (Luke 8:3). However, her most defining moment in the Gospels is her deliverance by Yeshua, who healed her of seven demons (Luke 8:2).

To stand at the foot of the cross required bravery, as being associated with a crucified man could bring shame or even danger. Mary’s steadfastness speaks of her faith and love for Yeshua, embodying the commitment of a true disciple.
Luke 23:55-56; 24:1-10: The Empty Tomb

“The women who had come with Him from the Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how His body was laid. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes. But on Shabbat they rested according to the commandment.
Now on the first day of the week, at daybreak, the women came to the tomb, carrying the spices they had prepared. 2 They found the stone had been rolled away from the tomb; 3 but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Yeshua.
4 And while they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. 5 The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you search for the living among the dead?
6 He is not here, but He is risen! Remember what He told you when He was still in the Galilee, 7 saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be executed, and on the third day rise up.
8 And they were reminded of His words. 9 And when they returned from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to everyone else. 10 Now it was Miriam from Magdala, Joanna, the Miriam of Jacob and others together with them who were telling these things to the emissaries.”
Mary Magdalene and the other women were the first to witness the empty tomb. Their discovery marked the beginning of the resurrection narrative.
Commentary:
In Jewish culture, burial preparation was a deeply personal act of honor. Caring for a body is considered the highest form of chesed (loving-kindness) because it is completely selfless. A person who has passed away can offer nothing in return, making this act of compassion purely about giving, not receiving.
Despite their grief and the risks involved, these women prioritized their love for Yeshua over their fears. The fact that women were the first to witness the resurrection is a radical statement about their value and role in God’s Kingdom.
John 20:1-18: Mary, the First Witness to the Resurrection
16 Yeshua says to her, “Miriam!”Turning around, she says to Him in Aramaic,“Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Yeshua says to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet gone up to the Father. Go to My brothers and tell them, ‘I am going up to My Father and your Father, to My God and your God.’”
