The Firing Squad – A True Story of Courage and Faith
The Firing Squad is based on the true story of three prisoners in an Indonesian prison who find themselves on death row, many of them being drug dealers. In some countries, dealing drugs can get you the death sentence and that was certainly the case here. They unexpectedly find themselves on a spiritual journey that not only changes THEIR lives but changes the heart of the prison itself.
Witnessing someone’s hope and faith can guide people towards redemption, even in the most dire of circumstances, as the movie displays.
The story highlights the brutal truths of prison life in some foreign nations, where our Western rights may not apply and our country might be unable to help us. Being American, this story emphasizes the importance of our privileged situation and the potential challenges faced by those imprisoned abroad.
The movie also showcases the remarkable tenacity of the human spirit. The prison environment is portrayed with raw authenticity, and it serves as an effective backdrop that emphasizes the movie’s themes of hardship and redemption.
The Cast
Kevin Sorbo, known for his roles in God’s Not Dead and Let There Be Light, plays Pastor Lynbrook, a character whose faith, demeanor and guidance become a ray of hope for the other prisoners. James Barrington also shines as Peter Lone, our main character who was living life large before finding himself in prison. I thought he added depth and authenticity to the cast. And, of course, there is the amazing Cuba Gooding Jr.
Cuba Gooding Jr.’s Powerful Performance
I was SO excited to see that Cuba Gooding Jr. was in this movie and he just shines in his role as Samuel Wilson, another man who is on death row in the same Indonesian prison. Gooding was nothing short of amazing, really capturing the raw and emotional journey of a man confronting his past and seeking redemption. There were several times during the film where Gooding brought tears to my eyes—his depiction of Samuel’s faith in the face of death is deeply touching and profoundly human. I won’t give any spoilers but let me just say that Gooding’s singing of Amazing Grace toward the end of the movie was just so powerful and emotional.

My Final Thoughts
The Firing Squad is more than just “another Christian movie”; it’s an exploration of the power of faith, the importance of redemption, and the belief that even in our darkest moments, we can find the light when we put our faith in God. Cuba Gooding Jr.’s and Kevin Sorbo’s performances alone makes this a must-see, but it’s this true story’s heart and soul that make it one of the best Christian movies I have seen.
Don’t miss out on this remarkable movie. We need to make sure Christian films get the attention they truly deserve and reach as many people for Jesus as possible.
