In this message on entering God’s presence in the Holy of Holies, I will discuss how the Holy of Holies of the Tabernacle is a picture of us, as believers, entering into the very presence of God. We do this by entering into relationship with Him through prayer and the Word.
Entering God’s Presence in the Holy of Holies
Within the Holy of Holies sat one item; the Ark of the Covenant.
On the top of the Ark was a covering of solid gold known as the Mercy Seat. This was the place where God Himself dwelled.
It was in the Holy of Holies that the High Priest, and only the High Priest, would come into His presence once a year on Yom Kippur, to sprinkle the blood of the sacrifice onto the Mercy Seat and make atonement for himself, his family and the people of Israel.
The High Priest would meet with God at the Mercy Seat and speak with God (and God with him) this one time each year.
Only this one man, only this one time per year.
God’s presence was hidden behind a thick veil.
Entering God’s Presence – The Veil
The veil that separated the Holy Place from the Holy of Holies was not a thin veil at all. It was a very thick, heavy curtain without separation. In other words, it was one solid panel.
The only way to enter behind the veil was to through the side where the veil ended. There was no way to enter otherwise.
When Jesus died on the cross, the Bible tells us in Matthew 27:51
The tearing of the veil accomplished two things.
1. Giving Man Direct to God
Man no longer required a High Priest. Jesus Himself became our High Priest and through Him we can come directly into God’s presence.
2. God’s Glory Loosed
Before Jesus died on the cross, God’s glory resided beyond the veil on the Mercy Seat. Once the veil was torn, God’s glory was revealed, not just in the Temple but in all the earth!
His glory resides with us!
Jesus paid the price, once and for all giving us an intimate relationship with God and allowing us to live each day in God’s presence!
