What Is the Armor of God?
Paul begins with a call to strength that still rings true for us today.
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”
Ephesians 6:10–11 (ESV)
Paul was writing from a Roman prison, likely surrounded by soldiers. He used their armor as a powerful illustration of how God equips us spiritually. He wasn’t talking about physical gear—he was revealing spiritual truths that help us stand firm in faith.
We’re told to “put on” the whole armor. That tells us it’s available, but we have a responsibility to wear it. It doesn’t happen automatically. This isn’t just head knowledge—it’s a daily decision to suit up in what God has given us.
Why We Need Spiritual Armor
The Bible doesn’t sugarcoat our situation. Paul reminds us:
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)
In other words, the real fight isn’t with your difficult coworker, your disobedient child, or your bank account. The battle is spiritual. And spiritual battles need spiritual solutions.
This Armor of God Bible Study isn’t about surviving—it’s about standing. Paul repeats that word several times in this passage. Stand. Stand. Stand. That’s what this armor helps us do.
Understanding Each Piece of the Armor
Paul didn’t randomly list the armor in Ephesians 6—each piece has deep significance for how we live as strong, grounded believers. The armor of God covers every part of us: our thinking, our emotions, our walk, our protection, and our defense. Each piece is a gift, but it’s also a responsibility—we have to choose to put it on. In the next sections, we’ll walk through each part of this spiritual armor and look at how it strengthens us to stand firm in our faith and walk in victory.
The Belt of Truth
Paul starts with the belt because everything else is built on truth.
“Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth…”
Ephesians 6:14a (ESV)
In ancient times, the belt secured the soldier’s tunic and held his weapons. Spiritually speaking, truth is what holds our lives together.
The enemy is a liar. He twists reality and feeds us shame, insecurity, and confusion. But God’s truth anchors us. When we wrap ourselves in His truth—what He says about who we are and who He is—we can walk in confidence, not confusion.
Reading God’s Word regularly is how we tighten that belt. Let truth be the filter for your thoughts, emotions, and decisions.
The Breastplate of Righteousness
The breastplate protects the heart. And spiritually, that’s exactly what righteousness does.
“…and having put on the breastplate of righteousness…”
Ephesians 6:14b (ESV)
This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about the righteousness we receive through Jesus. When we trust Him, we are made right with God. That truth guards our hearts from condemnation and shame.
But it’s also about choosing to live rightly. Daily decisions matter. When we walk in obedience, we’re not giving the enemy easy access to our heart.
So when guilt creeps in or you’re tempted to beat yourself up, remind yourself: You are clothed in righteousness—not your own, but Christ’s.
Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Roman soldiers wore sturdy footwear that gave them stability. You can’t fight well if you’re slipping around.
“…and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.”
Ephesians 6:15 (ESV)
God’s peace is a firm foundation. It gives us the strength to keep walking, even when life is hard.
This kind of peace isn’t the absence of trouble—it’s the presence of Jesus. When we know the good news of salvation and remember we belong to Him, we don’t panic. We stand ready, sure-footed.
If your life feels unsettled, this is a reminder to plant your feet in the truth of the gospel. Let peace be the path you walk in.
The Shield of Faith
The enemy is going to launch attacks. That’s not a maybe—it’s a certainty. But we’re not without defense.
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.”
Ephesians 6:16 (ESV)
Those flaming darts can be lies, doubts, discouragement, temptation—you name it. But faith blocks them.
Faith isn’t about feelings. It’s a choice to trust God’s promises even when circumstances don’t make sense.
The more you use your shield, the stronger it gets. Practice lifting it up through prayer, through Scripture, and by speaking truth out loud when fear creeps in.
The Helmet of Salvation
Salvation secures our mind. That’s why this helmet is so important.
“And take the helmet of salvation…”
Ephesians 6:17a (ESV)
The enemy often targets your thoughts—your fears, your worth, your hope. But salvation reminds you that you are safe, secure, and spoken for.
When you wear the helmet of salvation, you’re protecting your thoughts with truth. You’re reminding yourself daily: I belong to God. I’ve been rescued. My future is in His hands.
Let that identity shape your thinking. When doubt and anxiety try to creep in, hold your head high. You’re covered.
The Sword of the Spirit
Now we come to our only offensive weapon—the Word of God.
“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Ephesians 6:17b (ESV)
This isn’t just about reading your Bible. It’s about using it. Speaking it. Fighting with it.
When Jesus was tempted, He answered every attack with Scripture. That’s how we do it too.
Memorize verses that speak to the battles you face. Write them on sticky notes. Say them out loud. God’s Word cuts through confusion, silences the enemy, and builds you up from the inside out.
Don’t Forget to Pray
While not listed as a piece of armor, prayer is the thread that ties it all together.
“…praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end, keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints.”
Ephesians 6:18 (ESV)
Prayer keeps us connected to our source of strength. It keeps us alert. It invites God’s presence into our battles.
Don’t wait for a crisis to pray. Make it your rhythm. It doesn’t have to be fancy—just be real with God. Ask, listen, thank, cry, celebrate. He’s listening.
How to Put On the Armor of God Each Morning
Here’s a simple way to start your day with intention:
- Truth: “God, help me believe what’s true about You and about myself today.”
- Righteousness: “Thank You for covering me. Help me live in a way that honors You.”
- Peace: “Let Your peace guide my steps. Keep me steady.”
- Faith: “No matter what happens, I trust You. Strengthen my faith.”
- Salvation: “Guard my mind with the truth that I am Yours forever.”
- Word: “Bring Your Word to my mind. Help me speak it when I need it.”
Visualize it. Say it out loud. Let it be your spiritual wardrobe.
