Have a baby on the way? Being a mother can be disheartening from time to time. You’re giving so much of yourself and some days, it feels as if it can never be enough. But don’t despair, as per Joshua 1:9 –
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Indeed, the truth about motherhood is that it’s not easy every day. You’ll have plenty of days where you are ridden by doubts and insecurities.

Are you doing everything right? It’s an impossible question to answer. But unfortunately, too many young mothers struggle with perfection.
Nothing can prepare you for the challenges of motherhood. Of course, you can read parenting books to know what to expect, but most of these books deal with the development of your baby and the steps to look forward to.
There is no parenting book that can pick you up when you feel like a failure for not understanding your baby’s needs from time to time or for when you doubt yourself.
So, this article is dedicated to all the new and expectant mothers who are worried about what the future with baby holds.
1. You’ll make mistakes, and it’s ok
No book will teach you everything you need to know to be a mother. It’s just a fact!
So you WILL make mistakes along the way. But don’t beat yourself up for it. Embrace your mistakes and learn the lessons from them.
You don’t have to feel guilty about getting things wrong from time to time. After all, nobody has taught you how to manage YOUR family. Every family and situation is different! You can learn basic skills but your family will be different from mine!
Like every mother, you are learning day after day with each unique situation. With every slip-up, you can learn a new lesson about yourself, about life, and about your baby.
Remember something important: Nobody, but you, expects you to be perfect. You’re allowed to get confused, scared or even feel lost.

2. If You Have Not Been Acquainted With Your Pelvic Floor, You Will Be!
Your body goes through a lot of changes during pregnancy, during delivery and after the birth of your child. In fact, many mothers experience childbirth “injuries” while giving birth – most injuries, such as minor tearing, will cause you to be sore for a while.
But one of the most common complaints and one that you might not even think of is the weakening of your pelvic floor muscles.
Indeed, during the pregnancy, the muscles are stretched to adapt to allow room for the baby to be born. They weaken through this process, which can sometimes lead to some incontinence issues (makes sneezing quite interesting!).

3. You will not sleep enough!
Let’s be honest…life after having a baby is exhausting!
During the first 2 years of your baby’s life, you will experience about 6 months of sleep deficit.
You will experience exhaustion as you’ve never had before. It will affect many areas of your life!!
Coping mechanisms, such as COFFEE if you’re not breastfeeding, will help! If breastfeeding, you should limit your intake to 300 mg a day – 16 ounces of brewed coffee.
Take family members up on offers to help!! Family and friends can prove to be vital allies in your early days of motherhood! Even if it is just bringing you a meal, every little bit of help is so important.
Nap whenever baby naps! During the first couple of months, you will be grabbing sleep when you can find it! The dishes can wait. If the baby sleeps, you should too!
But also, when you are not able to nap, reading the Word and spending time in prayer will help you immensely!! It is rest for your spirit and that is just as important as rest for your body!
Psalm 55:6 says:
“I said, “Oh, that I had the wings of a dove! I would fly away and be at rest.”
The dove is symbolic of the Holy Spirit (the Ruach HaKodesh in Hebrew) and as a child of God you DO have His wings and you can “fly away” in your spirit as you immerse yourself in the Word and in prayer and find your rest.
From being too tired to think straight to fearing mistakes, motherhood is emotionally challenging. In reality, nothing prepares you for it. But don’t worry… every day gets easier and soon you’ll embrace the mistakes along the way and love the journey!
