Effective Spiritual Warfare – We Are Soldiers of Jesus

You see, some people view faith in God as a crutch; they think that it is escapism. They believe we want a nice trouble-free life, floating on clouds all day with the Hallelujah chorus playing in the background.

They think we are weak so we choose faith. But the reality is quite different.

The moment you are saved it is like enlisting in an army; God’s army!

In joining the army of God you immediately enter the heat of battle. It is an age-old battle in a war that has been waging on for several millennia. The battle between God’s elect and their enemy.

You see, before I was saved I made plenty of mistakes. I had to suffer the consequences of those mistakes, as we all must.

But that was it. I only had to deal with ME and the dumb mistakes I made. I posed no threat to this enemy who, at the time, I wasn’t even aware of.

Once I was saved it all changed. I now had a very real enemy. I had an enemy who wanted me to forfeit my eternal inheritance and blessed assurance.

An enemy who wanted me to denounce the God I just gave my life to.  An enemy who wanted me to run at the first sign of trouble.

One who thought if he just turned the heat up high enough I would run for the hills.  An enemy who wanted me dead, quite honestly.  He wanted me to say…

THIS IS TOO HARD!

I CAN’T FACE THESE ATTACKS!

I WAS BETTER OFF BEFORE I GOT SAVED!

Let’s face it.  He didn’t care about me before I was saved! I was irrelevant to him.  But now….oh NOW he cares…

Effective Spiritual Warfare – Having Spiritual Strength to Be More Than a Conqueror In Christ

Am I weak? No!

Weak would be doing whatever I want! Weakness would be giving in to the lusts of the flesh. It would be thinking if I call the shots and make the rules then I don’t have to answer to anyone but myself and this enemy that I don’t even believe in will leave me alone.

Weak would be refusing to admit that I wasn’t my own god!

Weakness would be not wanting to give up ALL my vices and face ALL my inadequacies and give my life over to God and face all these battles and attacks head on (although not without help).

No! That is not weakness. That is strength!

A strength that can only come from the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.

A strength that comes from having the honesty to admit I am NOT all that and I do NOT control everything! Strength that makes me admit that although the world DOES in fact revolve, it just isn’t around me!

You see, we are at war, and warriors don’t run! Warriors stand and they fight! Warriors follow their commander!

Some people love to just sing songs about how Jesus loves us and how we have the victory in Jesus but ignore the fact that there is a battle raging!

Effective Spiritual Warfare – Victory in Jesus!

Yes!  We have victory! But victory over what?

Victory is defined as “an act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition.”

Defeating an enemy or opponent.

We have victory in Jesus but we have victory in battle!

We have victory over sin and death!

We have victory IN Him and THROUGH Him but to have victory requires opposition.

Romans 8:37 says:

“…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” (KJV)

Being a conqueror requires a battle! Being a conqueror requires a war! Being a conqueror requires an enemy to conquer!

Crutch?

If you believe that then you have never faced the devil head-on. You have never experienced a dark night of the soul.  You have never felt an evil so thick it was palpable.

It is a war!  No, there is no cloud hopping here!

Effective Spiritual Warfare Requires The Armor of God

If Jesus didn’t expect me to do battle then why did He arm me?

“Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.  For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.

Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;

Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” Ephesians 6:11-18 (KJV)

Is Faith in God a Crutch?

I don’t see a crutch on that list!

There’s no crutch in my arsenal. I have armor. I have weapons. I have a Savior. I have a Commander and King. I have the Word of God!

2 Corinthians 10:4:

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds…” KJV

I have a Commander of this Army of God and THROUGH Him I have the victory! I am more than a conqueror in Christ!

Effective Spiritual Warfare – We Are More Than Conquerors

Let me make this clear, it says WE are more than conquerors IN Christ. In other words, He doesn’t surround us in a spiritual bubble and keep everything bad out. We go through bad things and we go through attacks!

God never said weapons wouldn’t be formed. He said none would prosper!

Isaiah 54:17

“No weapon formed against you shall prosper…” (NKJV)

There WILL be attacks, just as in every battle!

But He DOES make sure we are armed, equipped and have back up for when the battles rages at our doors!  And He DOES ensure we have the ultimate victory!  We DO overcome these attacks when they do come and we do it THROUGH Him if we put on the armor of God and…

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he WILL flee from you.” James 4:7
(KJV – emphasis mine)

Victory IN Jesus; it is ours!

You ARE more than a conqueror in Christ!

Amen! This couldn’t be more true. I will never understand why nonbelievers thing the Christian life is easy & for the weak. It is NOT easy! But it sure is worth the battle. 🙂

I needed that. I am definitely going through a time of battle spiritually. I was just thinking about what I needed to do battle against all the things coming against me.

I really enjoyed reading your post! The Bible is very clear about the spiritual warfare going on around us and the challenges of following Christ instead of giving in. Temptation is everywhere and we need to rely on God for our strength and to carry us through the tough times. His strength and love are beyond compare and his team is triumphant! Great post!

Very good post on Spiritual warfare. I hear far too often that Christians do not think about this anymore. That is the most dangerous spot to be in. So important to put on the full armour of God every day, and keep focused on the task at hand with Him.

    Diane,
Thanks for this awesome battle manifesto for those who are in Christ Jesus. There are no “crutches” in God’s armor and what strength-giving reminders that “no weapon formed against us shall prosper” and after we are suited up in God’s armor, He calls us to “stand” because the battle belongs to Him. Excellent post! Read it over a few times!!
    Blessings,

We do tend to blind ourselves to the battle behid powerful songs like ‘Victory in Jesus’ and truths like ‘more than a conquerer in Jesus’ but you are absolutely right. Becoming a Christian is enlisting in God’s army during war time!!

    Diane,

I love this…”There’s no crutch in my arsenal. I have armor. I have weapons. I have a Savior. I have a Commander and King. I have the Word of God!” Such a powerful, encouraging post. I really needed this reminder today.
