We have all heard the terms Spiritual Warfare and “being more than a conqueror” in Christ, but some who don’t yet know God don’t fully understand what it all really means.
You see, some people view being a Christian as using God as a crutch; they think that it is escapism. They think we want a nice life, floating on clouds and singing hymns all day with the Hallelujah chorus playing in the background.
They think we are weak.
But the reality is quite different.

Enlisting in God’s Army
The moment you are saved it is like enlisting in an army…God’s army…and you immediately enter the heat of battle. It is an age-old battle in a war that has been waging on for several millennia. The battle between God’s elect and their enemy.
You see, before I was saved I made plenty of mistakes. I had to suffer the consequences of those mistakes, as we all have to. But that was it. I only had to deal with ME and the dumb mistakes I made. I posed no threat to this enemy who, at the time, I wasn’t even aware of.
Once I was saved it all changed. I now had a very real enemy. I had an enemy who wanted me to forfeit my eternal inheritance and blessed assurance.
An enemy who wanted me to denounce the God I just gave my life to. An enemy who wanted me to run at the first sign of trouble.
One who thought if he just turned the heat up high enough I would run for the hills. An enemy who wanted me dead, quite honestly. He wanted me to say…
THIS IS TOO HARD!
I CAN’T FACE THESE ATTACKS!
I WAS BETTER OFF BEFORE I GOT SAVED!
Let’s face it. He didn’t care about me before I was saved…I was irrelevant to him. But now….oh NOW he cares…
Am I weak? No!
Weak would be doing whatever I want! Weak would be giving in to the lusts of the flesh. Weak would be thinking if I call the shots and make the rules then I don’t have to answer to anyone but myself and this enemy that I don’t even believe in will leave me alone.
Weak would be refusing to admit that I wasn’t my own god!
Weakness would be not wanting to give up ALL my vices and face ALL my inadequacies and give my life over to God and face all these battles and attacks head on (although not without help).
No! That is not weakness. That is strength!
A strength that can only come from the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords.
A strength that comes from having the honesty to admit I am NOT all that and I do NOT control everything! A strength that makes me admit that although the world DOES in fact revolve, it just isn’t around me!A strength that comes from having the honesty to admit I am NOT all that and I do NOT control everything! A strength that makes me admit that although the world DOES in fact revolve, it just isn't around me!Click To Tweet

Victory in Jesus!
Yes! We have victory! But victory over what?
Victory is defined as “an act of defeating an enemy or opponent in a battle, game, or other competition.”
Defeating an enemy or opponent.
We have victory in Jesus but we have victory in battle!
We have victory over sin and death!
We have victory IN Him and THROUGH Him but to have victory requires opposition.
Romans 8:37 says:
“…in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” (KJV)
Being a conqueror requires a battle! Being a conqueror requires a war! Being a conqueror requires an enemy to conquer!
If you believe that then you have never faced the devil head-on. You have never experienced a dark night of the soul. You have never felt an evil so thick it was palpable.
It is a war! No…there is no cloud hopping here!
Being a conqueror requires a battle! Being a conqueror requires a war!Click To Tweet
Putting On The Armor of God
If Jesus didn’t expect me to do battle then why did He arm me?
“Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;” Ephesians 6:11-18 (KJV)
I don’t see a crutch on that list!
There’s no crutch in my arsenal. I have armor. I have weapons. I have a Savior. I have a King. I have the Word of God
I have a Commander of this Army of God and THROUGH Him I have the victory.
Let me make this clear….it says WE are more than conquerors THROUGH Him. In other words, He doesn’t surround us in a spiritual bubble and keep everything bad out. We go through bad things and we go through attacks!
But He DOES make sure we are armed, equipped and have back up for when the battles rages at our doors! And He DOES ensure we have the victory! We DO overcome these attacks when they do come and we do it THROUGH Him if we put on the armor of God and…
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he WILL flee from you.” James 4:7
(KJV – emphasis mine)
Victory IN Jesus…..it is ours!
I read the end of the book and (spoiler)…we win!
I highly recommend this book by a dear friend of mine and my former Pastor/Messianic Rabbi, Moshe Laurie and his lovely wife Martha! It is a great book on spiritual warfare. Moshe is both a former Orthodox Jew and Officer in the Israeli Defense Forces with an amazing testimony and great insight into our spiritual battles!
