Who Was Huldah in the Bible?
Huldah was a prophetess during the reign of King Josiah in the Kingdom of Judah. Her story is recorded in 2 Kings 22:14-20 and 2 Chronicles 34:22-28. She lived in a time of significant religious reform when King Josiah sought to restore the worship of the Lord and rid the kingdom of idolatry. Huldah was consulted by King Josiah’s officials when a scroll of the Torah was discovered in the Temple, a find that prompted a profound religious awakening.
Historical Context of Huldah
To fully appreciate the powerful lessons from Huldah in the Bible, it is essential to understand the historical and cultural context in which she lived. Huldah lived in Jerusalem, the heart of the Kingdom of Judah, during the late seventh century BCE. This was a period marked by political instability and spiritual decline. The people of Judah had fallen into idol worship, and the Temple, which was supposed to be the center of worship for the Lord, had been neglected.
King Josiah, however, was a young and reform-minded king determined to bring his people back to the ways of their ancestors.
During renovations of the Temple, the high priest Hilkiah discovered a “Book of the Torah” (often thought to be a part of Deuteronomy), which had been forgotten. Recognizing the importance of this find, Josiah sent his officials, including the priest Hilkiah and Shaphan the scribe, to inquire of the Lord through Huldah, the prophetess.
Huldah’s Background and Family
Huldah is described in the scriptures as “the wife of Shallum, son of Tikvah (which means ‘hope’ in Hebrew), son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe” (2 Kings 22:14).
This description, though brief, provides a glimpse into her background. Being married to a man who held a position in the royal court suggests that Huldah was well-connected and possibly had a status that allowed her to be heard by the king’s emissaries. Despite the patriarchal society of ancient Israel, Huldah held a position of spiritual authority, recognized by the king himself.
While reading the story of Huldah, one of seven prophetesses mentioned in Tanach, you might have noticed an apparent discrepancy regarding the name of her husband’s father. Shallum is referred to as “son of Tikvah” in 2 Kings and son of Tokahath in 2 Chronicles.
Let’s break down the references:
- 2 Kings 22:14 – Here, Shallum is referred to as the “son of Tikvah” (“בֶּן־תִּקְוָה” in Hebrew).
- 2 Chronicles 34:22 – In this verse, Shallum is described as the “son of Tokhath” (“בֶּן־תּוֹקַת” in Hebrew, sometimes rendered as “Tokhath” or “Tokath” in English translations).
Possible Explanations for the Differences:
- Scribal Variations: One explanation is that the difference in names (“Tikvah” and “Tokhath”) is due to variations in the Hebrew manuscripts. Over centuries, as biblical texts were copied by hand, minor discrepancies could have been introduced into the texts. It’s possible that these two names represent different manuscript traditions.
- Transcription Errors: Another possibility is that one name is a transcription error or a variant spelling of the other. Hebrew names sometimes underwent changes or were spelled differently over time, especially when copied by different scribes.
- Different Generations or Lineages: It’s also possible that “Tikvah” and “Tokhath” might not refer to the immediate father of Shallum but rather to different ancestors. In some genealogical lists in the Bible, “son of” can mean “descendant of,” so the texts might be referring to different generations within the same family lineage. We see this done elsewhere in scripture so this would not be uncommon.
In fact, we see it in 2 Chronicles 34:2 where it states of Josiah, “He did right in the eyes of Adonai, and walked in the ways of his father David.” (TLV) David was not Josiah’s father but was, in fact, his ancestor. - Dual Names or Titles: In some cases, individuals in the Bible had more than one name or a name and a title. This practice was not uncommon in ancient times, where a person could have a given name and also be known by another name or title reflecting a personal attribute or family heritage.
While the exact reason for the difference between “Tikvah” and “Tokhath” is not definitively explained in the biblical text, these possible explanations offer some understanding of why Shallum might have two different names listed for his father. The variation does not affect the core of Huldah’s story but is an example of how textual differences can occur in ancient manuscripts.
The Story of Huldah in the Bible
Key Biblical Passages
As mentioned previously, Huldah’s story unfolds primarily in 2 Kings 22:14-20 and 2 Chronicles 34:22-28. When the book of the Torah was found, King Josiah’s heart was stirred, and he sought divine guidance.
Instead of turning to the more well-known male prophets of the time, such as Jeremiah or Zephaniah, Josiah’s officials sought out Huldah. This decision itself speaks volumes about her reputation and the respect she commanded as a prophetess.
Huldah’s Prophetic Message
Huldah’s response to the king’s inquiry was both direct and fearless. She confirmed that the words of the book were true and that disaster would indeed come upon Judah because of its disobedience to God’s commandments.
However, she also conveyed a message of mercy for King Josiah, stating that because his heart was responsive and he humbled himself before the Lord, he would not see the disaster in his lifetime (2 Kings 22:19-20).
Huldah’s prophecy demonstrated her unwavering commitment to conveying God’s truth, regardless of the consequences.
Key Lessons from Huldah’s Story
Courage and Boldness in Faith
One of the most striking lessons from Huldah in the Bible is her courage. In a time when women were often not given public roles of authority, Huldah stood boldly as a voice for the Lord. She did not shy away from delivering a hard message, even though it foretold destruction.
Her courage is a reminder to all believers of the importance of speaking truth in love, even when it is difficult or unpopular. Huldah’s boldness shows that God can use anyone, regardless of gender or societal status, to fulfill His purposes.
The Importance of Knowing God’s Word
Huldah’s role as a prophetess also underscores the importance of knowing and understanding God’s Word. Her deep knowledge of the Torah enabled her to interpret its implications accurately and authoritatively.
This is a valuable lesson for believers today about the importance of studying scripture and being prepared to offer wisdom and guidance based on God’s truth. In the words of the Psalmist: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), which was certainly true for Huldah.
Women as Leaders and Prophets in the Bible
Huldah’s story also teaches us about the significant roles that women played in biblical times, particularly in spiritual leadership. Alongside other prominent female figures like Deborah and Miriam, Huldah’s example challenges the often-limited perceptions of women’s roles in the faith community.
She was not only a spiritual leader but also a respected prophetess whose counsel was sought by the highest authority in the land. This lesson is vital for believers today, highlighting the need for inclusivity and recognizing the distinct gifts and callings of women in the faith community.
Obedience to God’s Call
Another important lesson we learn from Huldah in the Bible is obedience. Huldah was ready and willing to serve when called upon. Her obedience to God’s call, despite the societal norms and potential dangers of her time, is a powerful example for believers today. It shows that when we are called to serve or speak, we should do so with faith and commitment, trusting that God’s plan will succeed.
Huldah in the Context of Biblical Prophecy
Huldah’s story is set against the backdrop of the rich tradition of prophecy in Israel. Her role is unique because she is one of the few female prophets mentioned in the Bible.
This inclusion in the biblical narrative serves to highlight that the gift of prophecy and the ability to convey God’s truth is not limited by gender. God will use who He will use!
Huldah’s role in the discovery of the Torah scroll also underscores the importance of scripture in the prophetic tradition and its central place in guiding the spiritual and moral direction of the community.

Leadership Lessons for Today’s Believers
The powerful lessons from Huldah in the Bible are particularly relevant for modern believers, especially women. Her example as a courageous leader who spoke truth to power provides a powerful model for leadership today.
