Sharing is caring!

We continue on with our look at the Passover by looking at the other elements of the Seder, with a focus on the 4 cups. The 4 cups of Passover, although part of a Jewish seder, can help the Christian learn more about the roots of their faith and how Jesus spoke over them! We will look at each one and I will show you their significance both in the Seder and as it pertains to Jesus.

The 4 Cups of Passover

The four cups of Passover are a picture of God’s deliverance of Israel. For Christians this also points to their own deliverance since their Messiah Yeshua descends from the Jewish people. Learning about the Passover can be so important for the Christian.

Cup of Sanctification

Exodus 6:6

“Say therefore to the people of Israel, ‘I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians…” (ESV)

Just as the Lord brought Israel our from under the bondage of the Egyptians, Jesus our Messiah sanctifies us and sets us apart with His blood shed on the cross for our sins.

1 Corinthians 1:30

“And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption…” (ESV)

Cup of Deliverance

Exodus 6:6

“…and I will deliver you from slavery to them…” (ESV)

While the nation of Israel were slaves in Egypt, we too experience freedom from slavery as Jesus delivers us from slavery to sin and death!

Romans 6:20

“For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness.” (ESV)

Cup of Redemption

Exodus 6:6

“…and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.” (ESV)

Adonai redeemed the Jewish people for Himself. As Christians, you experienced redemption by the blood of the Lamb, once and for all! His blood was shed on the cross as a final sacrifice for sins. His arms outstretched on a tree, He gave Himself up for us to redeem us, save us and sanctify us!

Galatians 3:13

“Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—(ESV)

Cup of Hallel (Praise or Acceptance)

Exodus 6:7

“I will take you to be my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who has brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.” (ESV)

This is the cup Yeshua says in Matthew 26:29

“I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (ESV)

This is the cup that has the Jewish people look toward their acceptance into the Kingdom of the Father!

As Christians you look forward to the hope that is in your acceptance in Jesus and how He is your hope and your praise to the glory of God!

Reflection

Passover for the Jewish people is a time to reflect on God’s plan for mankind since the foundations of the earth. For Christians you look forward to the time we are with Him in our eternal home!

If you are invited to experience a Passover Seder with Jewish friends and family, I hope you find this helpful!

Revelation 21:1-4

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” (ESV)

Thank you so much for teaching on this. It’s so important for Christians to have a proper understanding of Passover.
