I had a moment of retrospection this morning in my prayer time.  I do love to sit in my prayer room and look over my sheet of answered prayers on the wall in front of me and see how God has worked in my life and in the lives of others.  I love to thank Him for the work He has done and the blessings He has granted.

But, I also love to look back at another list.  It is my list, sometimes only kept mentally, of unanswered prayers.  That is the list of things I have asked God for over my lifetime that He, in His divine wisdom, has refused me.

Many times we go to God in prayer for things we desire so badly.  It could be a prayer about a relationship, a job, a relocation…anything really.  And we look at what we are praying for and, at the time, we think, “This is everything I want!”

It may even be that we are praying for something we have wanted and prayed for all our lives!  Or so we think we wanted…

“Please God, please bless me with (insert person, place, thing here)”!

But sometimes God, in His mercy, says “This isn’t right for you.”  In His mercy He DOESN’T give us everything we ask Him for or think we want.  He, in His great love and abounding mercy, says “No!”.

“No, this isn’t the right person for you!”

“No, this isn’t the right job for you.”

“No, this isn’t the right place for you.”

“No, this isn’t the right timing.”

“No, I have something so much better for you if you just…wait.”

There have been so many times in my life where I have prayed so fervently for something, truly believing that, not only was it something I WANTED, but that it was God’s will!  It wasn’t anything bad..it wasn’t anything contrary to His will.  But behind the scenes, God was working things out for the better.  You see..

…sometimes the enemy of ‘better’ is ‘good’….

..because good causes us to settle.  We settle for wanting or praying for something ‘good’ when God desires to give us ‘better’.

Looking back over my life, I cannot see a single thing, in hindsight, that God has said ‘no’ to that He did not then give me even better than I asked.  I cannot see a single situation where He said no that it did not work out for the best.

“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)

Not a single time can I look back and think “Well, God didn’t give me what I asked for and now look at the mess I am in!”  No!  Not once!  Each and every thing, in hindsight, turned out for the better. Each time I am able to look back and think “I am so glad it happened that way”.

Yes, things that, at the time, seemed so painful…things I fell to my knees over, cried over, pleaded over, but didn’t get..yet now, today..I am so glad it happened that way.

God has blessed me with many ‘no’s.  And my fervent prayer now is that He continue to do just that.  Bless me with “No” Lord, whenever You choose, because my desire is always for your best!!  And I know His will is always going to be…best!

  2. Great post! I believe this entirely. We often pray selfish and even foolish prayers and if God answered them, we'd wonder why. I'm so thankful that God is God and knows what is best for us, His kids! Thank you for this post. Blessings to you!
