Judges 16- Why, Why, Why Delilah? - When Someone Shows You Who They are, Believe Them

In Judges 16 we have the story of Samson and Delilah.  Samson was a man of great strength and was dedicated in service to God upon his birth.  Delilah was a harlot and was paid 1,100 pieces of silver by the Philistines to find out where he got his strength so that they could defeat him and kill him.  You see Samson was giving the Philistines a lot of headaches.  He was a real thorn in their side and had killed quite a few of them.  They wanted him out of their way.  And he was infatuated with Delilah.  He loved her in fact.  So, they knew she would be able to charm him into revealing his secret to her.

So, Delilah asks Samson what it is that could remove his strength.  She asked him to tell her what could cause him to be defeated. The first time he lies to her.  He tells her it if he is tied with seven bowstrings, not yet dried, he will become weak like any other man.  So, while he sleeps, Delilah binds him with seven bowstrings that had been brought to her by the Philistines and she yells to him that the Philistines are upon him and he wakes up and busts out of these things like it was just yarn.
So, does Samson dump Delilah like a hot potato after this obvious attempt at removing his strength?  No…he stays with her!!  Not only does he stay with her, he does it again…and then a third time!!  THREE times he gives her false information and THREE times she attempts to use the information against him!!  You must read this and wonder what on earth he was thinking!!  Dude…she is trying to get you killed!!  This would qualify for a show on Investigation Discovery channel!!  Is he SO infatuated with this woman that he completely throws reason out the window??  He obviously had some degree of mistrust if he thought to lie to her three times!! But he keeps doing it!!

But some of us do that in life!  I’ve been guilty of it myself!  It could be a relationship, a job, anything in our lives.  Delilah was showing Samson exactly who she was!  He knew her to be a harlot.  He can see she is trying to trap him but he ignores the danger signs and continues to stick around.  To her defense, she is being very overt about who she is!  Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.  She fooled him THREE times and doesn’t stop there!!  Shame Samson…shame!

So, after this, she really heaps it on.  YOU DON’T LOVE ME!  IF YOU LOVED ME YOU WOULD TELL ME WHAT WOULD DEFEAT YOU!  Seriously Samson?

How many of us have heard that before?  IF YOU LOVED ME YOU WOULD (fill in the blank)!!  IF YOU REALLY LIKE YOUR JOB YOU WOULD (fill in the blank)!!  IF YOU WERE A GOOD CHRISTIAN YOU WOULD (fill in the blank)!!

But instead of saying ‘Bye Felicia’…or in this case, ‘Delilah’, he listens to her pestering him for DAYS about where his strength lies.  Finally he gives in..she wears him down…and he tells her.  It is his hair.  If his hair is shaved off, he loses his strength and becomes like any other man.  And, SURPRISE….she has his hair shaved while he sleeps!!

Then the Philistines come in and she yells to him again that the Philistines are upon him except, this time, he had no strength.  He is captured by the Philistines, locked up, made to perform for them like a circus clown and, ultimately he is able to topple the temple, dies in the process and takes thousands of Philistines with him because his hair had grown back in while he was kept prisoner.  Delilah literally was the death of him…and many others as well.

You see, through all this, Delilah was showing Samson exactly who she was!  When someone shows you who they are BELIEVE THEM.  When a situation shows you what it really is, BELIEVE IT.  When a job shows you exactly what you’ll have to give up, BELIEVE IT.  When God is showing you something isn’t right for you, BELIEVE HIM.

Don’t think it will change, don’t think YOU can change the person or job or circumstance, don’t believe a person will somehow magically change after you marry them.  BELIEVE THEM!   LISTEN TO THE WARNING SIRENS!!

My husband and I were watching a TV show not long ago and a woman was marrying someone for money.  She was obsessed with shopping, didn’t work, wanted expensive things.  The man asked her if she would marry him if he lost everything and she told him point blank…NO!  And he married her!!  He married her anyway!  My husband said to me, “You know, I have to give her credit.  She is being very honest about who she is.  She’s telling him it’s all about the money.”  And he was right!  Our friend Samson ignored multiple danger signs and it led to his demise. Sometimes God is waving a red flag right in front of our face and we ignore it.

If a friend is showing you, if someone you are dating is showing you, if a business associate is showing you..if even a family member is showing you…believe it!  Pay attention to the warning signs God is giving you!!  Not everyone who comes into our lives is meant to be part of our story. This is especially true if someone demonstrates signs of being abusive!  Run…don’t walk!  You cannot change them..only God can.

If you have a great guy but he watches sports constantly and it drives you NUTS…don’t marry him thinking once you’re married you’re going to get him to stop watching!!  You marry him if you KNOW you can live with him watching sports, without nagging him about it!!  He is showing you he is into watching sports all the time…either accept that about him or don’t marry him.  Better yet, start watching with him!!  But don’t think you can change him!  That is who he is!  If a man cheats on you while you are dating, don’t marry him thinking that will change once he is married!!  He is showing you who he is!!  If you interview for a job and they are basically letting you know you are going to be working a lot of hours with little pay, don’t take it thinking once you get in there you are going to change things!  They are telling you how it is!!

Pay attention to the warning signs.  They are right there..waving in your face!  Don’t turn a blind eye like our friend Samson did.  Pray, seek God, get godly counsel…but don’t ignore the signs.

  1. I laugh at Samson's case, because...really Samson, really. I've read this story and had the same thoughts "Dude, she wants to kill you stop talking to her" but I've never related it to my life the way you just did. Sometimes I wonder why certain stories are in the Bible, and then someone like you comes around and shows me. I have done what Samson did. I actually stayed with a guy for five years even though he was quite honest about who he was, (and God told me too) and my life was a whole lot more difficult for it. Thank you for making this story so relatable.

    • Heather thank you...and believe me, I totally relate. I was actually not even planning on doing a post today and I was doing my daily reading and came to that chapter. It just hit me...like you said..really Samson? LOL I have been there like you!! I was in relationships for way too long when they showed me just who they were. God bless you and thank you for commenting! I love hearing I helped someone connect the dots that way!!

  2. Ah yes! You will know them by their fruit! Awesome post! It can be so dangerous to follow our feelings over discernment but thank you for the reminder to pay close attention. Loving others does not mean we should be naive.

    • Thank you so much Natalie!! Your comments are always a blessing!!

  3. Amen and Amen. Lots of wisdom here.

  4. Oh Diane, this is SO GOOD!! My gosh, Samson gives us the BEST example of ignoring the glaring red flags! SHAME.

Thank you for giving us such great insights into this story and offering us valuable truth we all need to consider. This has to hit home for all who read it. I know I was reflecting on my own Samson stories in the past and I needed this convicting and encouraging reminder to be ever vigilant in those clear warning signs of danger! I have ignored God's waving red flag quite a few times in my life, and oh do I regret it.

Sharing and pinning this excellent post!

    • Thank you so much Christine!! I'm so glad it resonated with you!! And I appreciate you sharing!!
